What is SPAN?

SPAN is a daily word puzzle where the hidden answer can be any length from 4 to 9 letters, and players aren't told how long it is. Each guess receives Wordle-style color feedback for letters, plus a gold dot clue when your guess is exactly one letter off the target length.

How to play SPAN

Enter a valid 4–9 letter word as your guess. After each guess, letters are marked green (right letter and position), gold (right letter, wrong position), or grey (not in the word). A gold dot appears above the puzzle only if your guess is exactly one letter longer or shorter than the answer; no dot appears when you're spot on or off by two or more. You have seven guesses per day to figure out both the word and its length.

Tips & strategy

• Use early guesses of different lengths to narrow down the answer's length while also getting letter feedback.
• Pay close attention to gold dots: they tell you when you're just one letter away in length, which helps zero in on the target.
• Start with words that use common vowels and consonants to quickly eliminate or confirm letters.
• If you see no gold dot after a guess, you know your guess is either exactly the right length or off by at least two—use that info to adjust.
• Remember that any real word from 4 to 9 letters is allowed, so don't limit yourself to common five-letter words.
