What is Spelling Bee?

Spelling Bee is the NYT hive game: seven letters, one mandatory centre letter, and a hunt for as many words as you can make. Reaching 'Genius' is the daily badge of honour.

How to play Spelling Bee

Build words of four letters or more using only the seven hive letters; every word must contain the centre letter, and letters can repeat. Longer words score more, and a pangram that uses all seven letters earns a big bonus that vaults your rank.

Tips & strategy

• Cycle prefixes and suffixes (RE-, -ING, -IEST) around the centre letter to mine word families.
• Hunt the pangram early — it's worth the most and confirms which letters combine.
• Plurals and -ED forms add quick points once you've found the root.
