What is Calorle?

Calorle is a daily guessing game that asks players to estimate the calories in a real fast-food menu item. A new item is posted every day at midnight Eastern, and everyone sees the same item. The game is free to play in the browser and includes a demo mode with sample data.

The win-zone scaling is a fair twist, but hearts and extra guesses compromise the purity of a daily challenge.

It's a fun little brain tease that fits perfectly into a coffee break, and the higher/lower hints keep it snappy.

How to play Calorle

Make up to six guesses for the day's item. After each guess, the game tells you to go higher or lower and shows how close you were using hot, warm, cold, or ice. You win by landing inside the win zone: exact number for items under 500 calories, within 10 for 500–999, and a slightly wider range on larger items.

Tips & strategy

  • Start with a middle-of-the-road number, like 500–600, to learn whether the item is larger or smaller.
  • Use the hot/cold/ice clue along with the higher/lower direction; if you're 'cold,' you're far off and should adjust significantly.
  • Keep sides and drinks in mind—they are often lower in calories than main entrees, while sauces, cheese, and fried preparations push numbers up.
  • If the item is under 500 calories, aim for the exact number; for 500–999, staying within 10 is enough to win.
  • Play daily to keep your streak, and save your streak with an email if you want to play on another device.

Frequently asked questions

Is Calorle free?

Yes, the game is free to play in the browser. Optional purchases add extra guesses or heart refills.

When does the daily item reset?

A new item is published every day at midnight Eastern, and it is the same for all players.

What do hearts do?

Hearts protect your streak when you miss a day or lose a puzzle. You can hold up to three, and you earn them through referrals or by playing seven days in a row.

What are extra guesses?

Extra guesses give you a seventh try after missing all six. Solving with one keeps your streak, but it counts as a loss on leaderboards.

Where do the calorie numbers come from?

Calories are taken from each chain's published US nutrition information, and the result screen links to the source.
