Wordio Rush is a fast 1v1 word duel: seven letters, thirty seconds, one opponent, and five rounds to prove your word-building speed. Each round is a clean, simple race — same letters for both players, same board, same time limit. If you’re new, here’s the orientation you need before your first match.
Starting your first match
Wordio Rush runs free in your browser, and you can jump in without an account.
- Open the Wordio Rush page and choose Find a match — you can pick an opponent difficulty from Beginner to Expert.
- Prefer to play someone you know? Choose Challenge a friend, copy the link, and send it. The match starts when your friend joins.
- Once connected, your rack of seven letters appears and Round 1 begins immediately.
You can play as a guest, but signing in lets you save your Rush stats and track your progress.
The basic rules
The core loop is simple: build one word from your seven letters. Your opponent gets exactly the same seven letters, so you’re both working from the same hand.
Here’s how to build words:
- Tap, type, or drag tiles to arrange them on the board.
- Press Space to return every tile to your rack and shuffle.
- Your word must start in the first square and cannot have gaps.
- A valid word needs at least two letters and must be in the Wordio dictionary.
- Invalid words score zero, so it’s worth checking your spelling before locking in.
When you’re happy, press Play to lock your word. If the 30-second timer runs out first, your saved arrangement is submitted automatically — no need to rush the button at the last second.
Important: when a round has a bonus square, your word must actually reach that square for the multiplier to count. A bonus square elsewhere on the board doesn’t help unless your word touches it.
The five-round flow
Every Wordio Rush match lasts five rounds, with 30 seconds per round. The board setup changes as the match progresses.
| Round | Bonus setup | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | No bonus squares | Called “an even start” — just build your first word |
| Rounds 2–3 | Letter multiplier | Your word must reach the bonus square |
| Rounds 4–5 | Word multiplier | Your word must reach the bonus square |
One extra rule applies throughout: if you manage to use all seven letters in a valid word, you earn 10 bonus points, added after any multiplier.
Round 1 is intentionally clean — no bonuses, no distractions. It’s the same 30 seconds as every other round, but it gives both players an even starting point.
Between rounds
After each round, the screen shows your word, your opponent’s word, and how the points landed. The results stay visible for up to 10 seconds.
You don’t have to wait the full time though. Both players can press Ready (or Enter) to start the next round sooner. If both of you are quick, the match keeps moving at a brisk pace.
The same setup repeats through all five rounds: new word, same rules, identical letters, and the clock running down.
The final word
After Round 5, you reach the end-of-match screen. It shows the full results across all five rounds and lets you:
- Send a message to your opponent
- Show all rounds for a detailed breakdown
- Share the result
- Play again
Wordio Rush rewards quick thinking and a solid vocabulary, but the format is simple enough to pick up in one match. Build a valid word, watch the clock, and make every one of the five rounds count.
