What Is The Ball Grid?
The Ball Grid is a free daily Premier League football trivia game. Each day a new 3×3 grid drops, and to fill each cell you name a player who satisfies both the row and column criteria for that season. There’s no login, it works on mobile, and a fresh grid arrives at midnight.
Everyone plays the same puzzle each day, and every cell has multiple valid answers. So there isn’t one “correct” lineup — there are lots of them. The challenge is finding players who fit, and deciding how bold you’re willing to be.
How the 3×3 Grid Is Built
Every board is drawn from one Premier League season, and that season is the entire world of the puzzle. A player only counts if they met the criteria within that season. The game gives a great example: Harry Kane scoring 20 goals in 2017/18 does nothing for you on a 2022/23 board. That single-season rule is what stops the grid collapsing into “name any famous player.”
Columns are usually clubs. Ten sides appear by name — Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Tottenham and West Ham — alongside grouped columns like Big Six Club, Non-Big Six Club, Top Half Club, Mid-Table Club and Bottom Half Club. A player qualifies for a club column if they made a Premier League appearance for that club during the season, which means January signings can legitimately fill two different club columns on the same board.
Rows are the statistical and biographical criteria. They fall into a handful of families:
| Row family | Examples from The Ball Grid |
|---|---|
| Output | 1+ Goals, 3+ Goals, 5+ Goals, 1+ Assists, 3+ Assists, More Goals Than Assists, More Away Goals Than Home, Took a Penalty |
| Discipline | 3+ Yellow Cards, 5+ Yellow Cards, Received a Red Card |
| Goalkeeping / defending | 7+ Clean Sheets |
| Workload | 3000+ Minutes |
| Position | Forward, Midfielder, Defender |
| Physical | Over 185cm, 190cm or Taller, Under 175cm |
So a cell labelled “Forward” and “Everton” needs a player who was an Everton forward in that season. A cell labelled “5+ Goals” and “Big Six Club” needs someone from a big six club who scored at least five league goals in that same season.
How to Play Your First Classic Grid
Classic Grid is your starting point. It’s The Ball Grid’s Rarity Mode, and it gives you unlimited time and up to 9 attempts to fill the board. Here’s a simple first-time walkthrough:
- Go to theballgrid.com. You don’t need an account.
- Open today’s Classic Grid. New daily challenges drop at midnight, and everyone gets the same one.
- Read the row and column labels before you start. Each intersection asks for a player who meets both requirements.
- Type a player’s name into the search box for the cell you want to fill.
- The game checks whether the player satisfies both the row and column criteria for that season.
- If they do, the cell fills. If not, it counts against your 9 attempts.
- Keep going until all nine cells are filled.
Tip: Before you type a name, check both labels. “Midfielder” and “Chelsea” is a different question from “Midfielder” and “Big Six Club” — even though Chelsea is a Big Six club, the grouped column works differently and may include more possible answers.
How Scoring Works in Classic Grid
Every answer in Classic Grid is scored on rarity. The more obscure the player, the higher your points. Since each cell has multiple valid answers, you can choose between a well-known player who safely fits the criteria or a more unexpected player who still fits and earns more points.
You don’t have to go obscure on every cell. A correct, common answer will still fill the cell. But if you want a high score, you’ll need to be bold at least some of the time.
What About Rapid Fire?
Rapid Fire is The Ball Grid’s speed mode. The timer starts the moment you hit GO, and the goal is to fill all 9 cells as fast as possible. Wrong answers add a +5 second penalty to your time. The fastest time wins, so it’s less about rarity and more about reacting quickly and accurately.
You can play both grids each day, and a Day Streak encourages you to come back tomorrow. There are also Previous Grids to revisit and a Leaderboard to compare against other players.
Quick FAQ
Do I need to know the exact season dates? No. The grid is drawn from one Premier League season, and the labels tell you what’s needed. You just need to know which players met those stats in that season.
Can a player count for two clubs? Yes. A player qualifies for a club column if they made a Premier League appearance for that club during the season — so January signings can sometimes fit two different club columns on the same board.
Is there a time limit in Classic Grid? No. Classic gives you unlimited time and up to 9 attempts. Rapid Fire is the timed mode.
Do I need an account? No. The Ball Grid is free, works on mobile, and doesn’t require a login.
