First time restoring? A plain-English guide to Masterpiece Dash's daily puzzle

A beginner-friendly walkthrough of Masterpiece Dash's daily puzzle, explaining the restore loop, clue, practice mode, streak rules, and browser saves. It focuses on helping new players understand each step before their first run.

The short version
  • Only incorrect placements add extra attempts; selecting, inspecting, and saving pieces are always free.
  • Practice with Mona Lisa is optional and has no effect on your score or streak, so use it to learn controls risk-free.
  • Your daily streak survives extra attempts, but resets if you miss a day; practice never counts toward the daily puzzle.
  • Progress is saved only in the browser you use, so return to the same device and avoid private or temporary sessions to keep your streak.

What you’re doing

Masterpiece Dash is a free daily browser puzzle that gives you one famous painting, broken into nine pieces. Your job is simple: study the painting, then put it back together. There are no fiddly sliders or timers to beat — just careful observation and tap-to-place controls.

If you’re new, the best way to get comfortable is to understand the loop first. Once you know what each step does, the daily puzzle feels much less intimidating.

The daily loop, step by step

  1. Open today’s puzzle. You’ll be offered optional practice or the option to go straight to today’s painting. You can skip practice at any time.
  2. Read today’s clue. The clue is one short line that hints at the artwork. You can treat it as a warm-up for your brain before the countdown begins.
  3. Wait for 3–2–1, then study. The game counts down, then shows you the full painting once so you can take a mental snapshot.
  4. Tap a piece to select it. The piece appears enlarged beside or below the board, and it stays visible while you decide where it goes.
  5. Tap an empty square where you think the piece belongs.
  6. Watch what happens. If the piece fits, it stays in place. If it doesn’t fit in that empty square, you get one extra attempt. Trying wrong placements is the only thing that adds extra attempts.
  7. Use the save spaces if you get stuck. You have two save spaces to keep pieces for later. Selecting, inspecting, and saving pieces are all free.
  8. Keep going until all nine pieces are restored.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to inspect pieces before placing them. Selecting and inspecting cost nothing — only incorrect placements add extra attempts.

Practice first with Mona Lisa

If you’ve never played before, the Mona Lisa practice is a great place to start. It uses the same tap-a-piece, tap-a-square mechanic as the daily puzzle, but it’s entirely optional and low-pressure.

You can start practice, leave it whenever you want, and jump straight into the real puzzle. Practice also doesn’t affect your score or your streak, so you can use it just to learn the controls without worrying about today’s run.

How to read the clue

Before you start restoring, the game can show you a clue for the day’s painting. It’s a short line, not a full art history lesson. For example, one clue describes “a celebrated portrait by a Renaissance polymath, famous for a smile that has puzzled the world.”

You don’t need to identify the painting from the clue to play, but it can help you anticipate the artwork before the 3–2–1 study phase. If you’d rather go in completely fresh, you can skip it and rely on the snapshot alone.

How the daily streak works

Your daily streak is simply the number of consecutive days you finish a painting. Complete one each day to keep it going. Miss a day, and the streak resets.

The important part: extra attempts do not break your streak. You can complete the day’s painting imperfectly and still keep your streak alive. Practice also doesn’t affect your streak in any way.

Each daily painting counts once, so the best way to build a long streak is to make restoration part of your daily routine — even on days when you don’t earn a perfect result.

How browser saves work

Your progress and streak are saved in this browser, not in an online account. That means you should come back to the same browser and device to continue where you left off.

Sometimes the browser’s storage may be unavailable. If that happens, the game will tell you. You can keep playing, but your results may be lost when you close or reload the page.

So if you care about your streak, use a browser where storage works normally, and avoid playing in a temporary or private session if you want your progress to stick around.
