First, Know the Goal
Crossonym is a daily word puzzle with a simple premise: guess synonyms for the day’s word, one letter at a time. Unlike a classic crossword, you’re not filling in clues from numbered prompts. Instead, the day’s anchor word is your starting point, and its letters are pre-revealed in every synonym. Your job is to supply the remaining letters.
Each day brings a new puzzle, and you can tap the date in the archive to work through past puzzles. Because every puzzle shares the same core mechanic, playing a couple of older rounds is a low-pressure way to feel comfortable before today’s run.
The Letter-Fill Mechanic, Plain and Simple
The most important thing to understand is that Crossonym is not a “guess a whole word” game. You type letters one at a time, and every letter you type fills every word it appears in. So if the board has five synonyms and the letter you choose belongs to three of them, all three will update at once.
This shared-fill mechanic is your biggest advantage. A single correct letter does more than reveal one word — it can make the rest of the board easier to read. It also means you should think of the board as one linked puzzle rather than a list of separate word puzzles.
A word is complete when it turns orange. Keep completing synonyms until every synonym is solved. If you make three mistakes along the way, the game ends.
Step-by-Step: How to Play Without Burning a Mistake
- Open today’s puzzle and look at the pre-revealed anchor letters. These are your clue and your filter. Read across all of the blanks first; don’t jump into typing.
- Think of a synonym for the anchor word that uses those visible letters. The word doesn’t have to be fancy — simple and common tends to be safer.
- Type one letter of that word. The letter will fill in everywhere it belongs on the board. If it fills something, that was a safe move.
- Let the new letters guide you. You may see partial words that were not obvious before. Complete a synonym to turn it orange and lock it in.
- Continue one letter at a time. Stop before each guess and ask: “Is there a word on this board that uses this letter?” If the answer is no, don’t type it.
- Solve every synonym before your third mistake.
That final rule is the one to repeat before every key press.
How to Manage Your 3 Mistakes
Three mistakes is not much room, but the letter-fill mechanic makes it possible to play conservatively.
Start From the Anchor Letters
The anchor word’s letters are already shown. Brainstorm synonyms from those letters before you try anything random. If you can’t think of a full synonym, look for one that shares a few of the visible letters and is likely to fit with what’s already on screen.
Type Letters That Are Likely to Appear in Several Words
Because a letter fills every word it appears in, choose letters that would logically appear in multiple common words — vowels like A, E, or O, or consonants that show up across several of the blanks. But be careful: this only works if you have reason to believe the letter is actually in a synonym. A “common” letter that is missing from the whole board still costs a mistake.
Use Each Reveal as a New Clue
The mechanic is called letter-fill because one letter can open up many words. When you type a letter and several words change, pause. Read the new combinations before typing another letter. Those partial words can confirm a synonym you weren’t sure about.
Don’t Guess Just to Test a Letter
Each letter typed is either useful or a mistake. There is no reward for testing a letter just to see if it’s there. If you are not confident, look at the anchor word and the pre-revealed letters again. This is a synonym puzzle — think about what word you would use to define the day’s word.
What Happens After 3 Mistakes?
The game ends when you reach three mistakes. You’ll see an “Out of mistakes” screen with options to keep playing or reveal the results; either way, today’s result is already recorded. Since each day is a fresh puzzle, the best way to improve is to treat a failed run as a practice round.
A Note for New Players
Your stats and streaks are saved on the device you’re playing on, so clearing your browser data will reset them. If you want to keep your history on different devices, you can set up an account using your email — no password needed. You can also turn on a daily reminder if you don’t want to miss the next puzzle.
The first few rounds of Crossonym can feel tricky because you’re not filling in letters one word at a time; the whole board reacts to every letter you type. Remember that the anchor letters are there to guide you, and the orange completion marker tells you when you’ve cracked a synonym. Keep your guesses purposeful, and your three mistakes will last the whole game.
