How to play Word Ladder

You get a start word and a target word of the same length. Tap a letter in the current word and choose its replacement to form a new word; each new word must differ from the previous one by exactly one letter and be a valid dictionary word. Your goal is to reach the target in as few steps as possible, with the fewest possible steps shown as par.

Tips & strategy

• Start with 4-letter ladders, which are described as the classic and gentler version, before trying 5-letter ladders.
• Work methodically: try changing one letter position at a time to move the current word closer to the target.
• Look for common, recognizable words to use as intermediate steps—like CORD and CARD in the COLD-to-WARM example.
