A tight scoring curve and real Wikidata sourcing make this a fair test of historical deduction, though the 1800 cutoff shows sensible restraint.

How to play TempusGuessr - Gazette

Read the three headlines shown in each round; they all come from the same year. Guess that year by typing it or using the slider, then confirm to see the correct year, how far off you were, and the source for each fact. Each round is worth up to 100 points, and points fall as your guess gets further from the real year.

Tips & strategy

  • Use the broadest clue first: one headline may be hard, but the other two can help narrow down the period.
  • Think about wars, treaties, discoveries, published works, and key life events, since rounds mix different subjects from the same year.
  • Combine all three headlines and look for a single year that makes all of them plausible.
  • A near miss still scores points, so make a guess even if you are not confident.
  • If you miss a day, remember the Archive lets you play past challenges for free.

Frequently asked questions

Are the headlines from newspapers of the time?

No. They are historical facts written as headlines for the game. The source of each fact appears after you make your guess.

Why does the game start in 1800?

Before 1800 there are far fewer well-known facts per year, which makes the rounds too difficult. Older facts appear in the Timeline mode, which goes back to 1500.

Do I need an account to play?

No. You can play without signing up. Google sign-in is optional and keeps your history and streak on any device.

Can I play a challenge I missed?

Yes. The Archive has every challenge since launch, and it is free.

Can I challenge a friend?

Yes. At the end of a game, use the Challenge a friend option to send a link with the same rounds and the score to beat.
