Shunt is a free daily puzzle based on the classic Inglenook Sidings model-railway challenge. Each day you rearrange eight wagons into a specified five-wagon train using limited siding space. A new puzzle appears once per day, and no sign-up is required.

How to play Shunt

Use the three short sidings and the headshunt to move wagons around until the eight wagons are sorted into today’s five-wagon train. The headshunt only has room for three wagons, so every move affects your limited space. Try to complete the arrangement in as few moves as possible and see whether you matched the fewest-moves solution.

Tips & strategy

• Plan your sequence before moving wagons, since track space is tight.
• Stage wagons in the sidings in small groups rather than moving them one at a time.
• Work backward from the target train order to figure out which wagons need the most repositioning.
• Use the headshunt only when necessary, because it fills up quickly.
• Count your moves as you go so you can tell whether your solution is close to the minimum.
