What is Rewind?

Rewind is a free daily photo game that asks players to date five historical photographs from a given day's set. The photos come from public-domain archives such as NASA, the Library of Congress, and the US National Archives, and cover everything from early cars to Moon landings. A new set is published at midnight for all players.

The two-year scoring window is a fair test of historical recall, but the real difficulty lives in the obscurity of the public-domain photos chosen.

How to play Rewind

Each day you are shown five real photos from history, one at a time. Drag or move the timeline to the year you think the photo was taken, then submit that guess. Guesses that land within two years of the actual date earn the higher reward.

Tips & strategy

  • Look for obvious visual cues such as clothing, cars, hairstyles, and architecture to narrow down the era.
  • Notice technology in the frame: old computers, cameras, spacecraft, or street infrastructure often date a photo quickly.
  • Remember that public-domain collections skew toward major 20th-century events, so consider historical milestones and famous imagery.
  • If you know the general decade, try zeroing in on a specific year rather than guessing broadly across the timeline.
  • For space and NASA photos, compare the mission and equipment style to known launches or programs.
