Primaries
What is Primaries?
Primaries is a daily puzzle that turns the canvas into a geometric challenge. Each day presents a fresh grid to fill with rectangles, but there's a catch: every rectangle must have a unique shape, and they all need to be as close in size as possible. The result is a meditative exercise in spatial reasoning that feels both artistic and mathematical.
How to play Primaries
The core mechanic is simple: drag to draw rectangles on the canvas, and tap one to remove it. The goal is to cover the entire area with rectangles, each with a different shape—a 2×3 and a 3×2 count as the same, so orientation doesn't matter. Your score is the 'gap': the difference in area between your largest and smallest rectangle. Lower is better, and the smallest possible gap is called 'perfect.' Some daily canvases include black squares that must be left empty, or a fixed rectangle marked with a small corner square, adding extra constraints to the puzzle.
Tips & strategy
- Keep your rectangles as uniform in area as you can to minimize the gap.
- Experiment freely—you can undo, clear, and redraw as often as you like.
- Once you finish a canvas, you can frame and sign it, and even share it on the day's wall.
Frequently asked questions
