Name a place. The more obscure your answer, the deeper your worm digs.
Platedle
What is Platedle?
Platedle is a daily puzzle that asks you to identify a US state from a photograph of its license plate, with the state name taped over.

Six tries and a plate that slowly zooms out — ideal for a coffee break, and it gets weirdly addictive.

A geography nerd’s treat: the distance-and-direction hints turn a wrong guess into a mini tour of the U.S., and the plate details are the real map.

The reveal is the best part — like staying for the credits after a good mystery, with the state name finally unmasked once the tape comes off.
How to play Platedle
Each round begins zoomed in on a detail of the plate, and each incorrect guess zooms the view out a little. After every guess, the game shows the distance and direction to the correct state and colors a map, with warmer shades indicating closer guesses. The plate's slogan, colors, and imagery all serve as clues. The tape is removed when the round ends.
Tips & strategy
- Pay attention to the plate's slogan and color scheme — many states are distinctive even without the name.
- Use the distance and direction feedback to triangulate your next guess.
- Plates are real photographs, spanning current designs and older ones still on the road.
