What is Guess the Chain?

Guess the Chain is a free daily map game that asks you to identify a US chain from a map of its locations. Each day's map plots dots for every location of one mystery chain, and you have six guesses to name it.

How to play Guess the Chain

Type a chain name into the guess box; close spellings are accepted and the best match is used. After each wrong guess, the game tells you whether your guess is the same kind of business, whether the real chain has more or fewer stores, and how much the two chains' maps overlap. You can also press Compare to see your guess's dots in blue, or reveal clues one at a time if you're stuck.

Tips & strategy

  • Look at the overall pattern before guessing: a tight cluster suggests a regional chain, while nationwide dots point to a bigger store or restaurant chain.
  • Use the category clue early to avoid guessing unrelated chains; it immediately narrows the field.
  • If your guess shows strong map overlap, think of chains that share the same geography and business type.
  • Pay attention to the store count comparison—it tells you whether the mystery chain has more or fewer locations than your guess.
  • When stuck, take clues from broad (category) to specific (first letter) to keep as much challenge as possible.
