What is Germle?

Germle is a daily outbreak puzzle about limiting the spread of infection through a social network. Before the outbreak begins, you vaccinate a few people to break up the network; once it starts, you quarantine one person per day to slow the infection. The goal is to save as many people as you can before the outbreak runs out of places to go.

A single misread of the social graph punishes you for the whole outbreak, so the real difficulty is deciding who stays unvaccinated.

The per-day quarantine cap makes this a tight numbers game of counting contacts before the infection curve outruns your score.

Germle gives 'outbreak' a new tense: you vaccinate, quarantine, then watch the network's own vocabulary infect your results.

How to play Germle

Tap people to vaccinate them before the outbreak starts; when all vaccines are used, the outbreak begins. Once it starts, you can quarantine one person per day. The game ends when the outbreak has nowhere left to spread, and your result can be copied and shared.

Tips & strategy

  • Use the contact numbers to identify highly connected people; vaccinating them can break the network into smaller pieces.
  • Plan your vaccinations before the outbreak starts, since vaccination is no longer available once the infection begins.
  • Choose quarantine targets based on which people are still connected to infected parts of the network.
  • Watch for people who refuse vaccines, since they remain vulnerable and can still be reached by the outbreak.
  • If the network splits into separate groups, focus on isolating the parts that still contain infected people.
