Strong Suit basics: what it means to rank your hand from strongest to weakest

A beginner's guide to Strong Suit's daily quiz rules, explaining how to rank five categories from strongest to weakest, how the weakest is skipped, and how the remaining four are played in ascending order with rising multipliers. It also covers the six-pair rounds, the bonus round for the skipped category, and the fact that time only breaks ties.

The short version
  • Rank your five categories from strongest to weakest; your weakest is skipped from the four main rounds and saved for a bonus round after them.
  • The four main rounds are played from weakest remaining to strongest remaining, with multipliers of ×1, ×2, ×3, and ×4, so your strongest category lands in the final round.
  • Each of the four main rounds asks you to match six pairs; correct pairs score points using that round's multiplier.
  • There is no time pressure: you can take as long as you like, because time is only used to split tied scores.

If you’re new to Strong Suit, the core idea is straightforward: it’s a daily trivia quiz that “plays to your strengths.” You’re dealt five categories, you rank them from your strongest to your weakest, and then you play most of them with rising stakes. The catch? Your weakest category is skipped from the main rounds, only to come back in a bonus round.

Here’s a beginner walkthrough of the daily quiz rules and how a hand works.

What is a hand in Strong Suit?

A “hand” in Strong Suit is one full playthrough of the daily quiz. When you start, you’ll see a screen with five categories. The game asks you to rank them, and it labels this step clearly:

Rank your hand, strongest first

That ranking is important. Strong Suit uses it to decide two things:

  1. Which category to skip as your weakest.
  2. How to order the four remaining categories in the main rounds.

In other words: you don’t play the hand in the same order you ranked it. Instead, after you remove your weakest category, you play the rest from weakest to strongest, so the round multipliers increase as the quiz goes on.

How to play the daily game

Here’s a step-by-step walkthrough of the main flow.

  1. Start a hand. When you open Strong Suit, you’ll see the day’s hand. If you’re brand new, use the “Try a practice hand” option first. Practice data is saved only in your browser, so it won’t affect your real scores.
  2. Look at your five categories. Take a moment to see which subjects are in the hand. Strong Suit might include some you know well and some you don’t.
  3. Tap the categories from strongest to weakest. On mobile or touch screens, you can tap or drag to arrange them. The category you put last is treated as your weakest.
  4. Let Strong Suit skip your weakest. The game tells you: “You’ll skip your weakest!” That category doesn’t appear in your four main rounds.
  5. Play the four remaining categories from weakest to strongest. Your weakest remaining category comes first, and your strongest remaining category comes last.
  6. Match six pairs in each round. Every round asks you to match six pairs. Correct pairs score points using that round’s multiplier.
  7. Play the bonus round. After the four main rounds, you get a bonus round for the one category you skipped.
  8. Review your result. Tap any round to see your answers and the fun fact attached to that question.

The four multiplier rounds

Each hand has four main rounds. The multipliers increase exactly like this:

Round Multiplier Pairs to match
Round 1 ×1 6
Round 2 ×2 6
Round 3 ×3 6
Round 4 ×4 6

Because the multipliers go up, your later rounds are worth more than your earlier ones. That’s why Strong Suit calls it your “hand”: you want to arrange things so your strongest category lands in the highest-value round.

What does “strongest first” really mean?

Ranking your hand strongest first might feel counterintuitive because you don’t play the rounds in that order. Here’s what happens with a simple example:

  • You rank your five categories: A, B, C, D, E from strongest to weakest.
  • E is weakest, so E is skipped.
  • For the main rounds, you play D, then C, then B, then A.
  • A, your strongest, is saved for the ×4 round.

So your original ranking determines the line-up, but the play order is actually weakest to strongest.

The bonus round for the skipped category

The category you skipped doesn’t disappear entirely. After the four main rounds, Strong Suit gives you a bonus round where you play the one you skipped. The game describes it simply:

Bonus round: Play the one you skipped

That means you still get a chance to engage with the category you ranked lowest. This keeps the game friendly for everyone: no single weak subject ruins your whole hand.

Do you need to rush?

No. Strong Suit is not a speed puzzle. The game says:

Take as long as you like: time only splits tied scores.

So if two players finish with the same score, faster time might give one of them a higher ranking. Otherwise, you can think carefully about each round without losing points.

Frequently asked questions

How many categories are in a hand?
You’re dealt five categories. You rank all five, then your weakest is skipped, leaving four for the main rounds.

How many pairs do I need to match per round?
Six pairs in each round. That applies across all four multiplier rounds.

When does the bonus round happen?
It happens after the four main rounds and uses the category you skipped.

Is there a practice mode?
Yes. New players can try a practice hand with demo data. That practice data is saved only in the browser you’re using.

Strong Suit is a game about knowing what you’re good at, ordering the hand honestly, and then letting the multiplier rounds reward you for keeping your strongest category until the end.
